Become a Peter Mott House Docent!
Do you love history? Enjoy meeting people? Want to learn more about Lawnside, the Underground Railroad, the Mott family, and the freedom seekers whose stories connect to our community?
The Lawnside Historical Society is recruiting a new class of Peter Mott House Docents.
You don’t have to be a historian or already know the stories. We’ll teach you.
During this interactive training experience, you’ll explore:
- The Peter Mott House
- The Mott family
- The history of Lawnside
- Underground Railroad routes
- Stories of freedom seekers
You’ll learn the history, experience the Peter Mott House, and practice ways to bring these stories to life for visitors. Following training, you’ll have the opportunity to shadow experienced docents before leading tours yourself.
Fall 2026 Training
Day 1 — Docent Training

Day 2 — At the Peter Mott House
Saturday, October 17, 2026
10:00 AM–12:00 PM
Shadowing
Participants will complete a minimum of two docent shadowing experiences before Christmas.
No previous docent, museum, or historical experience is required—just curiosity, an interest in history, and a desire to share it with others.
History Needs Storytellers. Come learn the stories. Stay to tell them.
