Combee Book Club: June 2026

June 6 @ 10:00 AM 11:30 AM EDT

The Lawnside Historical Society invites you to an 8-month book club series exploring “Combee: Harriet Tubman, the Combahee River Raid, and Black Freedom during the Civil War” by Dr. Edda Fields-Black.

As custodians of the Peter Mott House, we are uniquely positioned to connect the history in Combee with our own site of freedom and resistance. The Combee Book Club will meet online and in-person at the Mott House, 26 Kings Court, Lawnside, NJ.  Each 90-minute session will include three engaging components:

  • Book Discussion – Talk through the assigned chapters together.
  • UGRR Activity – Connect the reading to our house and its history.
  • Genealogy Activity – Learn how to use historical records (like plantation inventories, church registers, Freedmen’s Bureau contracts, USCT enlistments, and pensions) to uncover the lives of freedom seekers.

This book club is more than a reading group — it’s a way to link scholarship, genealogy, and our community’s history. The agenda for each upcoming session will be shared monthly with registrants.
