339 Quaker Manumissions & Beyond Project

September 11, 2025 @ 7:00 PM 8:30 PM EDT

Members of the 339 Quaker Manumissions & Beyond Project will explain their painstaking work to uncover the connections between free people and members of the Religious Society of Friends who released them from slavery. Avis Wanda McClinton, Dennis Gregg, Ph.D., Katherine “Kitty” Mizuno and Shamele Jordon will outline their research.

The project is a faith-inspired, passion-driven historical initiative led by Avis Wanda who has dedicated her life to honoring and amplifying the voices of enslaved individuals once held by Quakers. Does this work substantiate the narrative that people freed by local Quakers settled in Snow Hill (Lawnside’s former name) in the 1800s?

At the heart of this project lie powerful and essential questions:

  • What happened to these individuals once they were manumitted?
  • Did they go on to build their families and communities?
  • Did the Quakers maintain relationships with them after their emancipation?

The diverse and committed group includes Christians, Quakers, African-Americans, white Americans, and those of other ancestries and faiths, united in a shared mission: to uncover and tell the untold stories of those who were freed.

Attendance is free but registration is required.
