Follow the Drinking Gourd to Perform on Feb. 12

Follow the Drinking Gourd, a musical group named for the song used to lead slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad, will perform for Black History Month in a celebration sponsored by the Lawnside Historical Society, Inc.

These extraordinary musicians convey the vitality of the African-American musical experience through everything from freedom songs and ragtime to excerpts from "Porgy and Bess."

The group consists of soprano Julie-Ann Whitely, a member of the Opera Company of Philadephia; bass Ivan Woods, a member of the Phildelphia Singers, the resident chorus of the Philadelphia Orchestera; and pianist Diane Goldsmith, who has performed widely as a soloist.

Families and friends can test their knowledge of African American History and Lawnside history, in particular, in a quiz that will precede the concert. Prizes will be given to those with the right answers.

The program will be held on Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lawnside Public School, 426 E. Charleston Ave., Lawnside. Admission is $1.
