Black Troops Present Living History at Peter Mott House

Members of the 22nd U.S. Colored Troops will set up camp at the Peter Mott House from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 13, for a commemoration of the firing on Fort Sumter and the start of the Civil War.

The 22nd is a group of living historians, led by Sgt. Rashid Khan, who dress in authentic uniforms to educate the public about the role of this troop of African-American men in the Civil War.

More than 300,000 Black men fought for the Union Army in the Civil War. Many were already free but pressed to be allowed to serve. Once enlisted, they fought valiantly. The 22nd trained in Philadelphia like the 3rd and 6th U.S. Colored Troops, but it operated in Virginia for much of the war.

The Camden County Historical Society is co-sponsor with the Lawnside Historical Society for the event, part of regional commemorative activities.

Peter Mott will greet the soldiers and other guests. A $2 donation is requested. The Camden County Historical Society is running buses from its location in Camden to the Mott House. Cost is $5 and includes admission to the Peter Mott House.
