The Lawnside Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8003 and the Lawnside Historical Society will host a Veterans Day Salute on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. called "Black Fighting Men." Admission is free.
Participating veterans will span generations including men from World War II, the post-segregation armed forces, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the current military action in Iraq. The program will be recorded and transcripts will be produced.
VFW Post 8003, organized by Lawnsiders in 1985, is led by Thaddeus Strickland, commander. African-American men from Lawnside and nearby communities have also been documented as combatants in the War of 1812, the Civil War and World War I.
The Lawnside Historical Society, formed in 1990, is dedicated to the preservation of the Peter Mott House and promoting our heritage.
