Kora-Playing Poet to Perform

Kurtis Lamkin, an award-winning poet known for his work with the Kora, will perform for African American History Month in Lawnside on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The cost is $3.

The Kora is a beautiful, 21-string West African instrument fashioned from a gourd calabash. Mr. Lamkin has performed his work internationally at festivals, concerts halls, prisons and universities. His poetry has been featured in several publications, including Paterson Literary Review, Crazy Horse and Black American Literature Forum.

He has performed on National Public Radio, Bill Moyers' "Fooling With Words" television special; and his animated poem "The Foxes Manifesto" was aired for two years on PBS. He has also done several recordings, the latest of which is entitled "Magic Yams."

The program will be held in the Wayne R. Bryant Community, Center, 323A E. Charleston Ave. at 7 p.m.

Mr. Lamkin's appearance was made possible in cooperation with the Haddon Heights High School English department which will feature him at assemblies earlier in the day.
