The Lawnside Historical Society, Inc., was founded in March 1990 to protect, preserve and maintain the Peter Mott House, which is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. The Society holds the deed to the property and maintains it for use as a museum and part of the Underground Railroad, the clandestine network to freedom for fugitives in the 19th century.
A membership organization, the Society meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of each month in the Lawnside Public School Library, 426 E. Charleston Ave., Lawnside, N.J.
The histories of Lawnside's families, notable residents, institutions and churches top the Society's list of priorities. Film and oral history projects are underway. Classes for docents, i.e., tour guides, also are being conducted.
The Society needs volunteers.
Committees are: Construction, Museum, Membership, Library, Exhibits, Programs, Fundraising, and Finance.
